The Challenge

SimpliSafe’s onboarding experience was a 72 page printed instruction booklet. As their suite of home security products grew, they needed a convenient way for new and returning users to pair, install, and test products after setup.

One of the main reasons customers go with SimpliSafe over their competitors is that it's a DIY system and doesn't require an expert to install. This meant that onboarding needed to be a cinch for their wide range of customers, who included college students, first time home buyers, and your 82 year-old grandma.

The Solution

Step 1: Mapping the Onboarding Flows

We started by mapping the ideal workflows for pairing each device with the base station. During the discovery process we defined requirements, user needs, and identified risks to the success of the project.

Steps 2-4: Design, Test, Iterate

Users primarily needed a way to pair each device one at a time with their system and support walking through the physical install. They also needed a way to test that they had set the device up correctly. I partnered with another designer to mockup the pairing and installation flows for SimpliSafe devices.

Onboarding start

The setup call to action would appear on first app load, but it was also important for the user to have the flexibility to close out of this and return. This is because physical install of the system could take 15-30 minutes, and we didn't want to assume that all users had time to dedicate to setup right now. To provide additional flexibility, we designed the experience to allow a user to start and stop setup at their leisure.

Base Station setup

There are several package options that SimpliSafe offers. Each one includes devices relevant to your needs. As a first time or returning customer, you can also select individual products to add to your system. The base station is the brain of the system, however, and users need to start setup with this device first so other devices can establish a relationship with the home.

Pairing devices and physical install

Physical installation can be a difficult step for SimpliSafe users. This is because an entry sensor is functionally different from a water sensor and, therefore, has a different install process. The hardware team at SimpliSafe is amazing, and did a great job designing intuitive sensors and cameras, but users still needed pairing, setup, and install instructions to support the process for each device. After recruiting and testing different versions of the installation flow experience, we learned that all devices do have something in common - Participants had an easier time setting up the device when shown an illustration with contextual queues about where to place the product (eg. water sensor under a boiler).

Note: Some of the products required a physical field test, which we conducted outside of the participants home.
Wifi mockups and edge cases

Edge cases

Designing a seamless user experience for hardware and software products is challenging. There are many complexities that need to be accounted for, like what happens when a device gets disconnected from the system. The user needs to be notified of the problem, and get help fixing it. This required the design team to have a close relationship with hardware and firmware engineers (think of firmware as the translator between hardware and software) to identify the potential friction points and troubleshooting steps.

I worked closely with product and engineering to design edge case flows for events like disconnected wifi, an unrecognized base station, and low battery states for the SimpliSafe cameras.

The experience also needed to account for a range of complexities including three generations of hardware and firmware, and limited wifi and cellular coverage due to industrial interference.

The Impact

The mobile app onboarding process (and companion responsive web designs) launched with the third generation of the SimpliSafe security system, and has made it easier for new and returning customers to get started protecting their home.
